OTTAWA, May 2019 —The Happening 2019 is excited to announce this year’s festival is taking place in and around the community of Wellington West, from Island Park to Bayview Bridge, from May 24 to June 1, 2019.

For the fifth year running, Ottawa residents are invited to partake in all that makes the neighbourhood of Wellington West unique. Participate in events, demos and sales, and enjoy special menus taking place in the neighbourhood. These activities will showcase the special businesses, arts, and organizations that make up our fabulous community.

Key Events:

The Happening Launch Party: Friday May 24, 7pm-10pm, at Vimy Brewing Company. There will be live music, craft beer, and kids’ activities from GT Express Wellington West and free skateboarding lessons from Birling Skateboard Shop from 7pm-9pm.

#HappeningHood Passport: Pick up your Passport at participating Wellington West businesses and follow #HappeningHood on social media for events and activities. See the full list of events as they are added to our website. Bring your Happening Passport with you when you visit participating businesses between May 24 to May 31 and have it signed. On June 1, drop it off when you attend The Happening ArtsPark to have the chance to win fantastic prizes!

The Happening ArtsPark: We are thrilled to be partnering again with the Hintonburg Community Association’s ArtsPark for our event on June 1. We will be hosting an amazing craft fair (from 10am to 4pm) along with lots of daytime, family-friendly programming. There will be live music and art performances all day (10am to 10pm), as well as a dance battle (new this year) and the popularArt Throw Down (4pm). There will be food from Seed to Sausage, The Merry Dairy, Dash Mobile Cookery and the Carleton Tavern and local craft beer from our friends at Beyond the Pale and Vimy Brewing Company!

2019 Happening Permanent Arts Grant: The Happening’s raison d’être is to raise funds to provide arts grants for the community. Donations can be made at The Happening Launch Party and The Happening ArtsPark. Money raised throughout the festival events and activities will be used to fund the 2019 Happening Permanent Arts Grant, as well as other community initiatives through The Happening and the Hintonburg Community Association (HCA).

We’d also like to invite you to join us in congratulating Maciek Peter Kozlowski, who was the winner of the 2018 Happening Permanent Art Grant. His new installation, “The Kiss,” will be installed on the outside of The Hair Committee (1278 Wellington Street West) and unveiled on May 25 at 2pm. “We are very proud of the diverse arts and community programming that we have been able to provide through The Happening,” said Summer Baird, co-founder of The Happening and owner of The Hintonburg Public House. “For the past five years, The Happening has been engaging local artists, community members and businesses to create a festival and arts grant program that contributes to andshowcases our diverse, inclusive and welcoming Wellington West.”

“Now in its 16th year, Hintonburg’s ArtsPark continues to highlight local artists, crafts, food and music and has raised thousands of dollars for arts in our community including delivering murals and community-based arts programming,” said Paulette Dozois, Chair of the HCA Arts Committee.

Call for volunteers: The Happening is 100% volunteer-run, including the Directors who work on the festival year-round. We invite the community members to join us and lend a hand on June 1 at our terrific, free event. We have a variety of volunteer positions for The Happening ArtsPark that need filling, including set-up and take-down, first aid attendants, barricade monitors and beer ticket salespersons (Smart Serve required), among other positions. We will be happy to sign for your volunteer hours for students as well. To sign up, please visit: https://volunteersignup.org/Q7DPW.
