Your Hintonburg Safety and Security Committee has long been a supporter and key participant of group actions to improve life and enjoyment of our community. We work with residents, city officials, the police and other stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of all in a fair and expedient manner and to give a voice to those whose lives have been negatively affected by crime, unsafe conditions and anti-social behaviour. We also participate in various city-wide groups and programs to share our experience and expertise
Over the years unwanted activity has varied. Drugs and alcohol fuelled many of the issues during the 1980’s and 1990’s. The community worked with the city to address problem properties, often run-down and at risk of becoming centers of unwanted activity. We petitioned provincial and federal governments on issues of prostitution, drug treatment, liquor licensing, landlord-tenant, rooming-house regulation and safer neighbourhoods. Members of the community also participate in various relevant city groups and programs. These collective efforts have resulted in greatly decreased illegal activities and their negative effects.

While we celebrate our successes we do need to remain vigilant to ensure our continued improved quality of life in Hintonburg. Issues like graffiti, theft/break-ins and matters of property and street safety merit watchful eyes. In recent years we have also worked with the City to implement the Vacant Unit Tax and supported the Vacant Property Permit Bylaw. We continue to work on this to ensure its effectiveness. We also work with neighbours and the Zoning Committee to ensure construction sites and practices are as safe as they can be.
We continue to work well with:
- our residents
- local businesses
- Community Policing Centre Officer
- the police in general
- city by-law officials
- elected officials
- and a great many other stakeholders
Our goals will always be to help keep crime to a minimum and keep our vibrant neighbourhood safe.
