In its April 2007 number, enRoute magazine named Hintonburg one of the top ten emerging neighbourhoods in Canada. The same month, Ottawa Magazine said Hintonburg is "hot" and credits our QUAD arts district as the reason residents think we're "cool". Then in June 2007, the Financial Times of London noted that the 'Burg is "thriving again" and the Ottawa Citizen, in a March 2008 editorial, declared "The changing nature of the neighbourhood is fascinating to watch... There is a hip, urban edge." So come explore the living or arts or business opportunities in Hintonburg -- you're sure to get a warm welcome.

Elmdale Tavern
Saturday June 13
The Kingmakers and Evil Farm Children ($5 cover)
The Kingmakers feature the solid thump of the upright "doghouse" bass, the echoing twang of the big hollow-body electric guitar and the solid backbeat of a full drum kit. The Kingmakers ain't no Stray Cats Part II...More like a snapshot of an era where blues, jazz and country fell into bed together and spawned a variety of genre-bending styles. The Evil Farm Children have a name that may sound like a B-grade drive-in horror flick, but they are a raw and raunchy trio from Canada's capital with a growing legion of fans, and reputation for intense stage shows. The band can easily do a rocking surf instrumental with the fervour of Dick Dale and, in a heartbeat, shift gears to roll right into a rockin' rockabilly rave up. www.elmdaletavern.ca.

Asterix Rising
July 7, 7 pm
Since 2001, Hintonburg residents have been a devoted and delighted audience for Salamander Theatre’s Shakespeare Young Company (SYC). Although the SYC is not scheduled to return until the summer of 2010, director Eleanor Crowder still plans to bring us summer theatre when she launches the inaugural production of her new company, Asterisk Rising. Crowder will team up with storyteller Katherine Grier to bring you stories from their families' pasts. In this imaginative fusion of acting and storytelling, you will encounter hard times and delight, while the tales and vivid characters will remind you of stories of your own. In the second half of the evening, they will encourage you to dust off your own memories, as five audience members are invited to share the stage and tell their own favourite stories. Grab your picnic baskets, blankets and bug spray and be at the park by 7 pm. Then sit back and savour the stories as Asterisk Rising opens up an oral family album. (Space is booked inside in case of rain.)
